Complementary contrast

General

The complementary color is the name given to the complementary color. They are diametrically opposed to each other on the Itten color wheel.

Body colors:

Complementary colors cancel each other out when they are mixed together, they result in a neutral gray-black when mixed

Light colors:

Two compensative colors (to put it simply, complementary light colors) mixed together produce white light.

Complementary color pairs

There is only one complementary color to each color - the complementary color. The clearer the color pairs are, the stronger the complementary contrast comes into play.

On Itten's color circle, the complementary colors are diametrically opposed to each other, i.e. yellow to violet, blue to orange, green to red, etc. If we break down the complementary color pairs, we find that in these always the basic colors according to Itten (blue, red, yellow ) are included. Each basic color has a complementary relationship to the mixture of the other two basic colors. This results in the following examples:

effect

As you can see from the successive contrast and the simultaneous contrast, we automatically add the complementary color to the perception.

The complementary contrast describes the effect of two colors, which have the greatest difference in hue, since they are diametrically opposite in Itten's color wheel. Due to their opposition, complementary colors increase each other, i.e. when placed next to each other they increase to the highest luminosity, to the highest color and light effect. Complementary contrasts easily create the impression of colourfulness. Since the complementary color pairs increase each other, each color comes into its own.

Complementary color pairs evoke the impression of something moving and lively, but also of the complete and closed.
