What is angry with a pet

Pets: Children have to follow simple rules

Even if pets generally have a positive influence on children, health risks should not be ignored. For example, children have to learn to wash their hands regularly after petting them and to treat animals with a certain respect, even if they are familiar to them. In the case of a dog or cat, this means, for example, keeping your distance when the animal is eating, not disturbing it when it is sleeping, or not deliberately annoying it. The dining table and the bed should be taboo for the pet ...

Most pet-borne diseases and wounds caused by pets can be prevented by simple measures. “Children have to wash their hands regularly after petting and are not allowed to kiss their darlings or let them lick them. Cleaning a cage and feeding it should only be reserved for older children who can follow certain hygiene rules. In particular, small children under five years of age should not have any contact with reptiles such as turtles, young birds, kittens, dogs and animals with diarrhea because of the risk of infection, ”warns Dr. Ulrich Fegeler, pediatrician and federal press spokesman for the professional association of paediatricians (BVKJ). Young dogs or cats can be infected with Toxocara worms from their mother and excrete their eggs with the faeces: Toxocarosis causes fever, enlarged liver and eye problems in the child. There are now drugs against the disease. Reptiles and chicks can carry salmonella on the surface of their bodies, a pathogen that causes severe diarrheal diseases - especially in young children.

Echinococcosis is caused by the dog tapeworm. The dog secretes the eggs, which can form very large cysts in humans. Dogs and cats that run free can even pick up the fox tapeworm. Pets should therefore visit the vet regularly to receive wormers. You should be vaccinated properly. If cats eat raw meat or catch mice, they can transmit toxoplasmosis pathogens through the faeces. These can cause swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, fever and rashes and lead to a miscarriage in pregnant women or - very rarely - infect the child in the womb with subsequent water head, inflammation of the retina and calcifications in the brain. The veterinarian can determine whether the cat is infected. Pseudo scabies is caused by mites that have migrated from animals to humans. Like animal lice, however, they do not reproduce in humans, so they are annoying but not dangerous. “Parents should be particularly careful with animals that have run into the area or that have been exotic or previously wild, as they can harbor unknown diseases. Wild mice, for example, can be infected with hantaviruses, which can cause kidney problems, ”says Dr. Fegeler. The pediatrician must treat all bite wounds and larger scratches.

Dog as a new family member: First of all, don't let your child go for a walk alone with him
Instead of letting children go out alone with the dog immediately, parents should accompany their offspring a few times. This is the best way for children to learn how to behave correctly in risky situations. This is what the Federal Working Group on More Safety for Children in Bonn points out. Triggers for critical moments are, for example, the cat on the other side of the street, the aggressive dog approaching the opposite direction or children who want to stroke the dog. These situations are difficult to assess for the small dog handlers.

Another option are dog schools that offer special lessons for children and dogs. An experienced dog trainer teaches the children the most important rules of conduct so that they do not endanger themselves or others.
