John F. Kennedy in Berlin

On June 26, 1963, then US President John F. Kennedy visited West Berlin on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. He was the first US President to come to the divided city on August 13, 1961, after the Berlin Wall was built. With his speech in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall, in which Kennedy emphasized the value of freedom and which ended with the famous sentence “I am a Berliner”, Kennedy left no doubt about his solidarity with Berlin and the Federal Republic of Germany.
