How do you digitize a photo
Digitize analog photos - that's how it works
The old family album is only available once. Over time, however, images become pale and cracked. Many therefore want to digitize the old photos. What are the options for this?

If you want to digitize analog images, you should first get an overview: How many images should there be? What quality do I need? And what should be done with the digital images? The highest quality can be achieved if there are still the matching negatives for the pictures. They can still be developed professionally and also digitized today. There are various options for digitizing the photos yourself.
Apps - from the analog photo directly to the smartphone
There are several, often free, apps for smartphones or tablets to digitize photos. For example, the photo scanner app from Google. With the mobile phone camera, the picture is photographed from several perspectives and the app automatically combines the individual recordings into one image. The advantage over simply taking photos: There are no reflections.
If the old memories are mainly to be shared on social media, such an app can come in handy. The disadvantage: the quality of the images depends on the quality of your own mobile phone camera. If you want to use an app, you should also be aware that data can be accessed.
Flatbed scanners come in handy with loose images
A flatbed scanner can perform several tasks at the same time and can also scan documents. Before digitizing photos, you should carefully consider which resolution the scanner should deliver. Regardless of the individual resolution, the flatbed scanner delivered the best results in Markt's practical test and reproduced the images very closely to the original.
However, flatbed scanners become impractical if the images are firmly glued to an album and cannot be removed without damage. The scanning itself is a difficult process with the album and the images have to be post-processed and cut out on the computer.
Album scanners are useful for photo albums
Album scanners solve this problem. Here the device itself is put on a photo and most scanners do not have to be connected to electricity or a computer. The images are saved directly to an SD card - this is useful if the images are to be stored in a digital archive anyway. There are different formats to choose from when scanning. However, the photos should not be larger than the contact surface itself.
Many album scanners also offer the function of digitizing negatives. The difference to professional digitizing of negatives: in order to restore the original color tone, professional devices read out the DX code, which is indicated on the negatives. Devices for private use usually convert the negatives without recognizing the special code. Even old slides can be digitized with such devices or special slide scanners.
Professionals help with impatience and too many pictures
Those who find these methods too time-consuming or whose private photo archive is too large can send in pictures, slides and negatives and have them professionally digitized. Hans-H. Graen, managing director of a digitization company, advises "it's best to sort beforehand". The analogue tidying up is usually easier than the digital one.
