Success factors: intelligence is overrated

Admittedly, you don't get very far with stupidity. At least not in the long term. A certain basic intelligence is a basic requirement to get far in life. Smart builders are sometimes enough. The heroization of intelligence, however, paints a picture that is too simple and wrong.

Of course, a well-functioning thinking apparatus can help to recognize connections, to learn to think outside the box and to draw logical conclusions in order to solve problems. These are all essential qualities to be one step ahead of the competition. But the IQ alone is not enough. In business in general and in everyday job life in particular, it has been shown time and again that smartness, know-how and high qualifications do not necessarily lead to more success. The human component is missing.

Quite a few bright heads have already mutated into "intelligence beasts" (in the literal sense of the word) if they are denied the necessary soft skills.

What is a success factor?

Success factors are characteristics or conditions that have a decisive influence on the success or failure of personal or entrepreneurial actions.

That is why we focus our attention here and now on these supposedly “soft” factors, which often make the difference when it comes to career and success. Or to put it another way: You don't just have to have brains, but above all personality.

1. Passion

Knowledge and intelligence cannot replace true passion for something. At most it can make the start easier, but you can only achieve long-term success if you approach a task with the necessary passion. This is the only way to keep going when things get tough and find the motivation to achieve success. Find out what your heart beats for and use your energy to work on it. Even without an Einstein's IQ, you will get ahead because you are willing to invest more.

2. Patience

Everyone wants everything immediately, nothing happens quickly enough - especially not career and success. Complete your studies at your early twenties, take on a management role in the company a few years later and then move up as fast as you can. Or start your own business and build your own empire in a short time. At least that was the dream. In reality, however, it takes patience, usually a great deal of it. Lots of things take your time and just don't work at the push of a button. This also applies to yourself and the development of skills or your personality. Do you lack patience, rush decisions or think too briefly - which may seem an advantage at the moment, but will not help or harm you in the long run.

3. Resilience

Nobody is immune to mistakes, setbacks or crises, it just depends on how you deal with them. Put your head in the sand and give up - or you will come out stronger, have learned something and do it better next time. Resilience is the ability not to let oneself get down, even when the circumstances are difficult, but to look for a better solution and to get up again after a rainfall, no matter how difficult and exhausting it is.

4. Authenticity

Authenticity means that you are who you are. They don't pretend, don't need to put on masks to please others, and they're just natural. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find authentic people. Most of them bend overhead, constantly trying to meet expectations and give not like they do, but in the way that others want you to see you. However, the lack of authenticity only leads to you denying yourself. You can no longer stand by yourself, you forget your own strengths and weaknesses. Instead of focusing on your progress, you are just busy trying to maintain a picture of yourself that doesn't correspond to you. If, on the other hand, you are authentic, use your qualities and you can really become successful.

5. A sense of responsibility

It is easy to take responsibility for good performance and to receive praise. Most find it difficult to apply this to mistakes and criticism. Responsible people know when you've made a mistake and vouch for it. At the same time, they also take the opportunity to provide a solution and fix the problem. They are excellent planners, are conscientious, and take responsibilities that have been given to them very seriously.

6. Self-control

Yes, there are situations in which everyone would like to blow their skin and scream their anger in the face of the other person. Self-control is an important factor as such explosions often only cause more damage. Controlling your own emotions also means understanding them and being able to deal with them properly. Self-control is often accompanied by discipline in other areas, so you can overcome your inner weaker self and are also ready to work in a disciplined manner in order to achieve your goals - even if you know that this is not always easy and also have tasks on you wait that may be less fun but still need to be done.

7. Openness to new experiences

Curiosity and the desire to think outside the box can lead to many opportunities that other people do not open up. In addition, it can improve understanding of interrelationships if existing structures or processes are questioned - and improved. This also includes accepting change instead of facing it with fear. This allows you to adapt faster, have a bit of an advantage over the competition and increase your chances of success.

8. Self-determination

Above all, you can be successful if you determine your goals and the way to get there yourself. Anyone who tries to simply copy others or who allows their personal goals to be dictated from outside ignores the important success factor of self-determination. Always remember that what is good and right for others does not necessarily have to be equally suitable for you. Find out for yourself what you want and how you can achieve it. Be clear about your short- and long-term goals and stick to them, even when others may not understand or advise against them. You should of course listen to the feedback and the criticism and, if necessary, react to it and adapt something to your strategy, but the final decision must always be yours.

9. Empathy

Those who want to be successful come into contact with countless other people on their way. You can stubbornly insist on your own point of view, ignore other suggestions and perspectives and position yourself as a loner - or demonstrate empathy, empathize with other people and move forward together. Many negotiations and business relationships fail due to a lack of willingness to show empathy, although the perspective of the other often provides many important insights for one's own position. Last but not least, empathy is a form of emotional intelligence.

10. Support

Many people develop a mentality based on the motto: “I don't need anyone because I am enough myself and can do anything.” Self-confidence may be very positive, but the one-against-all attitude is often the wrong one. As a social being, everyone depends on the support of others. This can primarily be your family, who are behind your professional decisions, or the circle of friends who value and recognize you for what you achieve and do. The social support gives you great security and helps you to overcome difficult phases and major hurdles. The key is the thought that important people will still stand by you even if you fail or are thrown back. With this knowledge in mind, you can make decisions and act all the more confidently.

11. Ambitions

The greatest IQ doesn't get you anywhere if you lack ambition. You need goals that are allowed to turn out big in order to grow on them and constantly work towards them. This goes hand in hand with the willingness to face challenges and make the necessary effort to make your dreams come true. The right attitude requires the necessary self-confidence. Only those who are convinced that they can master a challenge develop the right attitude to approach it positively.

12. Optimism

Your personal attitude is an important success factor, above all your belief in whether you can achieve something. In other words, if you assume from the start that you will fail, that your career will stall, that you will not be able to achieve your goals, or that anything that can somehow go wrong will go wrong - then it is likely to do so come. This is caused by the effect of self-fulfilling prophecy. Through the way you think, you are subconsciously contributing to exactly what you fear to happen. On the other hand, this connection also means that you can promote your success through optimism. By believing in yourself, your abilities and your goals, you increase the chance that you will achieve everything you set out to do.

13. Social skills

A functioning professional network, the ability to work with others on a project and celebrate a success together or have small talk at a business event. The characteristics of social competence can be different, but they all together form an important success factor. Social competence, whether in the form of a particularly good listener or helpful colleague, goes far beyond mere friendliness in dealing with other people - for many companies it is an important criterion when selecting new employees and the right way to deal with other people can lead the way level to higher positions.
