The burglar-proof front door: This keeps uninvited guests outside

Studies by the German Insurance Association (GdV) have shown that most burglars break into the house through doors and windows. In order to make the work of the uninvited guests more difficult, managing director Gause demands from the GdV an improvement of the burglar protection through modern security technology. What should you look for when buying a burglar-proof front door?

The main difference between a simple room door and a burglar-proof house door consists of the following components:

  • reinforced door leaves
  • stable lock with multi-point locking
  • Band side protection made of metal
  • Safety glass inserts
  • Stable material

Accordingly, when buying, you should not only pay attention to the appearance of your future front door, but also to stability, longevity, weather resistance and burglary protection. This is even regulated by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN).

According to the standard for burglary protection (DIN EN 1627), house doors have had to be divided into corresponding resistance classes in order to assess the resistance since 2011. The scale includes the resistance class (RC 1 N - RC 6; weak to very strong).

Resistance classes at a glance

The resistance classes indicate how long intruders are kept away by the respective door and which burglary tools they can withstand.

RC 1 N = This resistance class offers little or no protection against burglary. The perpetrators enter the building almost unhindered with lever tools, which is why there is a door with them

RC 1 N designation should only be used on the upper floors.

RC 2 N / RC 2 = Offers simple protection against intruders by means of a mushroom head lock. A front door with this resistance class lasts for 3 minutes before the perpetrator has broken open the door with a screwdriver, wedge or pliers.

RC 3 = optimal protection for private households who want to install glass elements in their front door if necessary. The glass part consists of burglar-resistant safety glass. Potential intruders need 5 minutes to force open the front door with a crowbar.

RC 4 - 6 = extremely high protection that makes sense for large warehouses. Due to the thick construction, the front doors can only be integrated into special masonry. In return, the doors in this resistance class offer 10 to 20 minutes of resistance to all possible break-in tools, including electrical devices such as angle grinders.

Which resistance class is right for you? Manufacturers of burglar-proof house doors usually recommend resistance class RC 2 or 3 to private households. Most burglars are casual criminals without professional tools.

Retrofitting the front door

If you find that you need a more resistant front door, you can simply retrofit it.

Material selection for a burglar-proof front door

In addition to the additional safety devices on a door, the material ensures a certain stability. Wood, aluminum and plastic are mostly used for door production. But what are the characteristics of these three materials?

Plastic = inexpensive, easy to care for and maintenance-free. A steel core prevents the door from warping due to rain and cold and no longer closing properly. A plastic door offers little resistance to burglars.

Aluminum = easy to care for and extremely stable. The latter enables good basic burglary protection. With appropriate surface care, aluminum doors are very weather-resistant.

Wood = natural and durable. Without a steel core, a wooden door warps very quickly and has to be replaced. In addition, there is a high need for care because wood has to be glazed regularly. A wooden door is not a major obstacle for burglars.

Alternatives for a smart home

If you are currently planning a new building, it is worth investing in modern security technology right away - this also includes a remote-controlled door system. You open the front door using a mobile phone app. For this purpose, a remote-controlled locking cylinder is installed in the front door and connected to the WLAN. To get into your home, you need the right app on your smartphone and a good internet connection.

If you live in a place with frequent internet disruptions, fingerprint sensors or electronic door locks with a code keypad are more suitable for you. Both door systems only allow people into the house who are either authorized with their fingerprint on the sensor or who know the number combination stored in the door lock.

However, this advanced security technology can result in high costs, which is why it is worth taking a look at the funding opportunities from the state.
