NCT (Korean: 엔시 티) is a South Korean boys group founded by SM Entertainment. NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology. The group is divided into several sub-units. Since the group was first introduced by the founder of their local label in January 2016, the group will consist of 23 members from April 2021, ranging from late teens to mid-twenties and participating in a total of four different sub-units.

On April 9, 2016, the group launched its first unit, the Rotary NCT U , with the double digital single "The 7th Sense" and "Without You". This was followed by the Seoul-based unit NCT 127 on July 7, 2016 with their extended game of the same name, and later the then still youthful unit NCT Dream on August 24, 2016 with the digital single "Chewing Gum". On January 17, 2019, the group presented the single album The vision launched their first overseas sub-unit, WayV, a seven-person unit based in China. A fifth unit is slated to make its debut in 2021, followed by its second sub-unit located overseas NCT Hollywood , a US-based entity, at a later date.

Along with separate activities for each group unit, the NCT umbrella group has so far partnered twice to promote full-length albums. The first time was the release of NCT 2018 Empathy in March 2018 and the second was the release of the two partial albums in October and November 2020 NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, which together sold over 2.6 million copies in two months, establishing itself as the best-selling physical album ever released by an act from SM Entertainment, earning the group their first Grand Daesang Award at the 2020 Asia Artist Awards.


In January 2016, SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man gave a presentation entitled "SMTOWN: New Culture Technology 2016" at the SM Coex Artium. The label's plan was to debut a new boys' group that would "fit" their cultural content strategy and include an "unlimited" number of members within the group who would debut in subsequent units. In addition, the group would have "sub-unit teams" and "collaborations" between these units. The name of the group was NCT , an acronym taken from the presentation title. The entire group is SM Entertainment's first idol group in almost two years since their labelmate Red Velvet's debut in August 2014, and then the first boy band since the South Korean-Chinese boy group Exo debuted in 2012.


2013–2016: founding and pre-debut activities

In December 2013, SM Entertainment introduced the first trainees to the pre-debut training team, SM Rookies, with Taeyong and Jeno being the first to be introduced by NCT. The team introduced a total of 16 additional members by the beginning of January 2016 and finally prepared for NCT. Members were filled through various auditions, with Johnny, Yuta, Ten, Mark, and Renjun joining the company through SM Global Auditions, while the remaining members were discovered through street casting, personal referrals, and community entertainment shows.

2016: NCT U, NCT 127 and NCT Dream debuts

On April 4, 2016, SM Entertainment announced NCT's first entity, NCT U (the "U" for United), which at the time consisted of six members: Taeil, Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun and Mark. NCT U released the digital singles "The 7th Sense" (Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun and Mark) on April 9th ​​and "Without You" in two versions on April 10th (a Korean version, that of Taeil, Doyoung and Jaehyun and a Chinese version with the addition of SM Rookies' Kun).

On April 9, 2016, NCT U made their first broadcast appearance with NCT On Air on V Live, hosted by Super Junior's Kim Hee-Chul. On the same day, they had their first live performance in China at the 16th Music Feng Yun Bang Awards, along with Chinese members Kun and Winwin. On April 15th the group made their debut in Korea on the Music Bank. They have been in three seasons of their reality series since then NCT Life performed with other trainees from SM Rookies.

On July 1, SM announced NCT's second unit, NCT 127. The unit is based in Seoul, where the number "127" represents the longitude coordinate of Seoul. The unit debuted with seven members: Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan. On July 7th they made their official debut in the music program M countdown and played the debut single "Fire Truck" and "Once Again". Her debut EP NCT # 127 was released digitally on July 10th and physically on July 11th. On July 29, the unit, in partnership with Coca-Cola, released the single "Taste the Feeling" for the SM Station project, while continuing to advertise "Fire" truck "on television music shows such as Music Bank , Show champion , Inkigayo .

On August 18, SM announced that the third unit of NCT would be called NCT Dream. The unit debuted with seven members: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle and Jisung. Their first single, "Chewing Gum," was released on August 24th and the group made their debut on the next day M countdown .

On December 6th, five members of NCT 127 (Yuta, Taeyong, Jaehyun, Mark, and Winwin), in collaboration with W Korea, released a special dance music video for the song "Good Thing". The track was eventually featured on NCT 127's second EP, Limitless, published . On December 20th, NCT 127 released the music video for "Switch". The single was previously released as a bonus track on NCT 127's debut EP and includes the SM trainee group SR15B.

2017: Promotions for NCT 127 and NCT Dream

On December 27, 2016, NCT 127 announced that they would be celebrating a comeback with two more members: Doyoung from NCT U and Johnny, new member. On January 5, 2017, NCT 127 released two music videos for "Limitless" and played the song M countdown . Their second EP Limitless was released digitally on January 6th and physically debuted at number one on January 9th Billboard The album's Map of the World, and the title track was later named one of the best K-pop songs of the year Dazed .

On February 1, 2017, NCT Dream announced that they would release their first physical single on February 9 The First will be released . SM Entertainment announced that Jaemin will not participate in this advertising cycle for health reasons. On March 8, NCT 127 members Johnny and Jaehyun became DJs for SBS Power FM's new program, NCTs Night night , which aired on March 20. Doyoung also joined the duo every Saturday as a special DJ.

On June 14th, NCT 127 released their third EP, Cherry bomb . They turned up M countdown returned to the stage and played the new songs "Cherry Bomb" and "0 Mile". Billboard and Idolator both later declared "Cherry Bomb" one of the best K-pop songs of the year.

On August 17th, NCT Dream released their first EP We Young . They made its debut on the title track M countdown . In December, NCT Dream released their first Christmas carol "Joy".

2018: New members, major projects, NCT 2018 empathy

In January 2018 NCT U (consisting of Taeil, Doyoung and Jaehyun) released the single "Timeless" as part of the SM Station project.

In mid-January, SM Entertainment presented NCT 2018, a project in which all 18 members of NCT were involved. On January 30th, SM released a video titled "NCT 2018 Yearbook # 1" which featured all previous members and introduced new members Kun, Lucas and Jungwoo. In February, as part of the NCT 2018 project, NCT released a series of online documentation videos entitled NCTmentary .

On March 14th, NCT released its first full-length album, NCT 2018 Empathy . The album contained six singles showing all of NCT's current units: "Boss", "Baby Don't Stop", "Yestoday" (All NCT U), "Go" (NCT Dream), "Touch" (NCT 127) , and "Black on Black" (NCT 2018).

Crowned on May 5, NCT Billboard Artist's emerging chart, the first time a K-pop act had made the list.

On September 3rd, NCT Dream released their second EP, We Go Up, with the lead single of the same name. SM confirmed that after the publication promotions were completed, Mark would graduate from NCT Dream.

On September 11th, Xiaojun was the first of the undisputed WayV members to be introduced as SMROOKIE. Respectfully with Hendery and Yangyang on September 13th and 15th.

On October 12th, NCT 127 released their first full-length album, Regular-Irregular , with the lead single "Regular". With Jungwoo, the group was officially expanded to 10 members. NCT 127 focused on promotions for the album in America.

On November 23, NCT 127 released the repackaged edition of Regular-Irregular with the title Regulate together with the lead single "Simon Says". It was announced that Winwin would not be participating in the comeback activities in preparation for his debut at WayV.

On December 28th, NCT Dream released the single "Candle Light" as part of the SM Station project.

2019: Debut of WayV, NCT 127's concert tour and new projects for NCT Dream and NCT U.

On December 31, 2018, SM Entertainment announced the fourth unit of NCT, WayV (Chinese: 威神 V; pinyin: Wēi shén V ), at. The unit is based in China and consists of 7 members: Kun, Winwin, Ten, Lucas, Hendery, Xiaojun and Yangyang. WayV is managed under Label V, a Chinese label that works with the production of SM. The unit officially debuted on January 17, 2019 with a Chinese version of NCT 127's "Regular". Her debut single album The vision was released digitally and also contained a Chinese version of NCT 127's "Come Back" and an original song entitled "Dream Launch".

On January 26, 2019, NCT 127 started their first concert tour, Neo City - The Origin, with tour dates in Korea, Japan, North America and Europe. During the tour, they released the single "Wakey-Wakey" on March 18, which later appeared on their first Japanese studio album Awaken was released which was released on April 17th. Their fourth EP, We are superhuman , was released on May 24th with the title track "Superhuman".

On May 9th, WayV released their first EP, Take off , along with the title track of the same name "Take Off".

On June 6th, NCT Dream released "Don't Need Your Love," a collaboration with HRVY in its third Season of SM station.

On July 26th, NCT Dream released their third EP, We boom , and their title track "Boom".

On October 29th, WayV released their second EP, Take over the moon , with the title track "Moonwalk".

On December 13th, NCT U (comprised of Taeil, Doyoung, Jaehyun and Haechan) released "Coming Home" as part of the SM Station X project.

2020: Projects for NCT 127, restructuring of NCT Dream, new members and NCT 2020 Resonance

On January 27, NCT 127 released a music video for a gift song entitled "Dreams Come True," followed by the release of their second studio album Neo Zone on March 6th, the title track "Kick It" not being their third release to be presented by Winwin, who is currently promoting WayV. This was also the official return of Jungwoo, who took a break for health reasons. The repackaged version of the album was released on May 19th Neo Zone: The Final Round with the title track "Punch".

On April 29th, NCT Dream released their fourth EP Reload with "Ridin '" as the title track with members Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle and Jisung. After the album's promotions, they removed their original concept of having members graduate when they are 20 years old in Korean (19 international) and continue as seven members, with the returning originally graduate member Mark.

In May 2020, three NCT entities hosted live online concerts in a series of concerts jointly organized by SM Entertainment and Naver for the world's first technology-enabled live concert streaming service Beyond LIVE . WayV, NCT Dream and NCT 127 performed live concerts on May 3rd, 10th and 17th.

On June 9th, WayV released their first full album Awaken the World with the title track "Turn Back Time".

In September, NCT announced that they will have a new project, NCT 2020, similar to their NCT 2018 project, where members of the various sub-units have been grouped into one album due to be released in October 2020. Your second album, NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1 was released on October 12th with all 4 units and 2 new members, Shotaro and Sungchan, joining a future NCT unit. Before the album was released, the NCT 2020 Resonance Pt announced . 1 had more than 1.1 million pre-orders, making it NCT's first million-seller album with no counting repackaged. NCT released the second part of their second album NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 2 on November 23.

On December 4th, NCT released a new single entitled "Resonance" which marks the finale of their second full album. The single combines "Make a Wish (birthday song)", "90's Love", "Work It" and "Raise the Roof" from their second full-length album into one song. The single includes all 23 members of the NCT 2020 project.

2021: Debut of the new unit and NCT Hollywood

In an interview with Star News on Jan. 13, Sungchan announced that a new unit would debut later this year.

On February 17th, NCT 127 released their second Japanese EP, Loveholic .

On March 10th, WayV released their third EP, Kick back , with the title track of the same name.

On May 6, it was announced that SM will be partnering with MGM Worldwide Television Group to recruit boys aged 13-25 from America and, through a competitive series, a US-based NCT entity called NCT-Hollywood to build.

On May 10th, NCT Dream released their first studio album, Hot sauce , which marked the group's first full comeback as a group of 7 since 2018. The album topped 1.7 million copies on pre-order.
