Think further, look further: In the “Broken Record” podcast, artists talk about making music - lovingly and unadorned.

He got Johnny Cash out of the blue. The Beastie Boys discovered. The Red Hot Chili Peppers made big: Rick Rubin is one of the most successful music producers ever. It is therefore not surprising that well-known stars are there when he does a podcast: Tom Petty, link opens in a new window, David Byrne, link opens in a new window, Norah Jones, link opens in a new window or Ozzy Osbourne, Link opens in a new window. Everyone has already been our guest.

Rubin is doing the “Broken Record” podcast together with journalists Malcolm Gladwell and Bruce Headlam. In each episode they talk to a musician about making music. The bearded star producer does this with great serenity - knowing that his guests like to talk a lot about their passions.

Serious topics are also discussed in the podcast - personal crises and setbacks. It already begins in the very first episode of 2018, Link opens in a new window: At that time, a forest fire raged in California and at the time of the first conversation Rubin did not know whether his studio might be on fire.

Thinking ahead in uncertain times: The SRF culture department recommends stories from culture and knowledge that are worth reading, listening to and seeing, and gives new food for thought.

In another episode, the rapper Andre 3000, Link opens in a new window, tells one half of the duo «Outkast» about a creative crisis that has dragged on for years. He, who is considered a genius, has not been able to write a song for a long time. And Darryl McDaniels, Link opens in a new window from “Run DMC”, tells how he was on the verge of suicide at the time of his greatest success: “As soon as the album was released, something inside of me said: 'I don't want to live anymore.'”

They are unadorned, but loving looks at making music and life as a musician. It's not always as bittersweet as in the examples mentioned.

Jack White, Link opens in a new window, for example, explores the question of why you can't sing a blues song about a Tesla. And from the drummer and producer Questlove, Link opens in a new window, so many stories are gushing that it fills two podcast episodes. These are conversations full of rousing energy that make you want to listen to a lot of music.
